John R WilliamsWant to learn how to collage? Our guest artist, Award-winning artist John M. Williams, will show you. In this 2 day workshop, he will present his work, show an artwork-in-progress, and guide you in creating your collage. We will have a Pop-Up Gallery Show of participants’ collages at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester.

We have extended the workshop to 2 days so each participant has time to finish their collage, plus we have added a pop-up show at the Griffin Museum of Photography of participants finished pieces.

As an autistic adult, John sees his work as a metaphor for his daily life. “The world is for me a chaotic place. Thoughts and images swirl around endlessly in my head, making it hard to stay calm and focused. Art helps me live with autism by channeling my energy into creating new visions. I make order out of chaos by organizing many disparate elements into a unified and coherent image. I spend significant time researching my subjects to learn about them and their historical surroundings. By marrying my artistic vision with my passion for history, I seek to present a new perspective on history.”

John’s work has been exhibited at the Outsider Art Fair in New York, the Outsider Folk Art Gallery in Pennsylvania, the SOFA show in Chicago and numerous locations in New England. Also his work has been featured in articles and books, including a cover story forThe Folk Art Messenger, feature article in the Boston Globe and Drawing Autism by Jill Mullin, soon to be reissued in paperback.

Collage is the cutting and assembling different forms from magazines, newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper, thus creating a new whole.

The theme of the workshop will be ‘Landscapes’.
All materials provided.
Light refreshments during a 30 minute break.

Pop up gallery is on April 4th at the Griffin Museum of Photography for those who want to participate.
